![]() The steel vs brass ammo debate goes like this: Steel ammo is considerably more affordable than brass however, long-term use of steel cases is reported to cause more damage to your gun. Let’s get started! Common Arguments for Brass Ammo There are a lot of conflicting opinions on this subject, but hopefully, by the end of this article, we will have a much clearer picture of the differences between the two. Both come with their advantages and tradeoffs, all of which we will be exploring here. ![]() In mine, it doesn't.Today, we will be diving into one of the age-old debates of the firearm community by discussing steel vs brass case ammo. If it makes sense in your situation, go ahead. Other side of the coin, if you've got an old truck that gets at best 12mpg (and gets the same mileage with the bed empty or full of rocks), then spending money for premium gas is a waste. You don't run a high performance car on the cheapest crap gas (because if you do, you don't get the same high performance), but you do save a couple bucks when you fill your tank. The downsides are numerous, and varied, and apply more to some situations than others. The upside to steel cased ammo is lower cost. Nor do I shoot the Blazer aluminum stuff. 22LR) so steel does nothing for me there. OK, maybe I am an ammo snob, I've got very little use for factory ammo, other than as a source for reloadable brass, (and of course. And, as I have been a high drag, low speed operator for several decades now, I've got no reason to change now. I had a firearms background before serving Uncle Sam, and while I understand, and actually agree with that attitude about their guns, in military use, I have a different one, about MINE, in my personal use. A lot of people with the "its just a tool" mindset got it from that kind of background. Department issued guns, military issue guns are not personal property, are not treated like they were. I put "my OWN money" that way to distinguish it from institutional (taxpayer) money. I don't know why you put "OWN" in all caps. A large range of variation, but not a large variety. The reasoning goes like this, you could own every variant of AK 47 by arsenal, maker, country of origin, what ever your criteria are, but they are all AKs. That, to me, is NOT a wide variety of semis. Since steel cased ammo is only made in a few calibers (military or former military ones, of various nations), then every semi auto handgun and rifle you own must be in one, or more, of those calibers. I have ran steel cased ammo through every semi-auto handgun and rifle I've owned. This is not an attack, its a "humorous observation" (note the :D) My guns are all shooters and my target ammo is cheap. I know there are many that are gun snobs and apparently ammo snobs, but I am not one of them. Therefore, I have no hesitation when it comes to running steel cased dirty ammo. That's why I buy guns that are good tools not pieces of artwork that need pampering. I have very limited funds for firearms and ammo. Whose money do you think I spend on firearms. ![]() Why the attack? Did I hit a sore spot just because my opinion differs from yours? 22LR? Do they even MAKE steel cased ammo for the. I think "if it won't handle steel, I don't want it" is a very limiting attitude, but its your choice. I also own a number of firearms that "won't handle steel" because there is no steel cased ammo MADE for them. I value my firearms, have spent my OWN money to acquire them, and won't abuse them unless its necessary for my survival. A valid opinion, of course, and the one most institutions use (military, etc.) but not my opinion. Guns are just tools, use and abuse them, when worn out/broken, buy another. This is the other side of the attitude coin. Which tells us little, other than that you haven't owned a wide variety of semis.
